Newsflash

The last couple of years have been a very exciting and rewarding time for us
Firstly, our three year old Quartz Hill Farm Johara Shaklan  (Eastwinds Ovation deceased x Quartz Hill Farm Ruby Shaklan) was Sashed as the Reserve Australian Champion Purebred Filly 3 & 4yo at the 2010 Australian National Arabian Championships .
wow what a thrill when her number was called out.
Prior to this she had been awarded:-
Top Five at the 2010 East Coast show
Reserve Champion
3yo filly at the 2009 National Stud Horse Show
Top Five at the 2009 East Coast Championships
Top Ten at the 2009 Australian National Championships (fourth on points)
This filly has been a model of consistency throughout her brief career
We are honoured to have also bred her mother Quartz Hill Farm Ruby Shaklan who is still here on our stud
Then on to our  2yo filly  Quartz Hill Farm Ooh La La  (Om El Eminence imp USA x Quartz Hill Farm Puss In Boots)
Who has also had a consistent and successful show career
2008 saw her debut at the AA Class National Capital Horse Show, as a Yearling
Where she was awarded
Champion, Supreme and Supreme Champion Junior Pure Arabian Exhibit
This great result was followed up with
Top Five at the 2009 East Coast
Top Ten at the 2009 Australian National Arabian Championships (fourth on points)
Reserve Champion at the 2009 National Stud Horse Show
Champion, Supreme Champion and Grand Champion Pure Arabian Exhibit at the 2009 National Capital Horse Show
Finalist at the 2010 East Coast
Top Ten at the 2010 Australian National Arabian Championships
Again, we are honoured to have also bred her mother, QHF Puss in Boots, who also remains at our stud
Other Quartz Hill Farm Horses have continued to be successful and given us much joy, but the two above deserve special mention
On a sadder note, we recently lost the beautiful ethereal white mare Eastwinds Made in Heaven, (Esscort imp x Shaklana) she was away at stud and died of a colic attack. We are now trying to rear her 3 month old orphan colt foal whom we have nicknamed ‘Luke’. Short for Luke Skywalker. We thought this was appropriate as we also have his half brother who is officially named QHF The Startrekker (nickname Jake), so now we have a Jake and a Luke, both grey boys. We will try and get Luke officially named as QHF The Skywalker.  We hope these two names will carry on the Heavenly theme and help perpetuate the memory of Made in Heaven.   May they grow up to be as beautiful as she was
Foaling Season 2009:
That season has come and gone.  We were expecting 3 foals but have just 1 instead
QHF Puss in Boots foaled to American Hero (imp USA), a beautiful bay filly to be named QHF Georgia Peach
QHF Ruby Shaklan
did not go in foal to QHF The Startrekker. She fooled us for a while though.
and QHF Luv Me Too was sold to Frank and Maria Daraio of Dara Park. She dutifully foaled a lovely filly to QHF The Startrekker for her new owners whom they have named Luv in the Stars
This filly is the only foal by The Startrekker so far and we wish Frank and Maria all the best with her
Foaling Season 2010
For this season we only bred two mares
QHF Luv in the Mist is in foal to SK Shakla Khan due October and
QHF Eminessence (Om El Eminence x QHF Luv Me Too) to The Startrekker. She is a maiden mare, so fingers crossed for an easy journey with the birth and mothering, due in early November

This past season we have had the pleasure of preparing and showing our friend, Debbie Conroy’s beautiful Anglo-arabian yearling gelding Sarmadee Sadat.
Sarmadee Sadat was named Champion Anglo- Arabian Gelding  at his Show debut late last year at the National Capital Horse Show. He followed this good result up with Champion Yearling Anglo gelding at East Coast 2010 and then the icing on the cake was his award of Australian National Top Five Yearling Anglo–Arabian. This came from a very strong class of 10 Anglo yearlings of all sexes. I believe he was the only gelding in the class.
He is partly Quartz Hill Farm bred as his sire was Shakla’s Silver Shaklan. His dam was a very correct and beautiful Stud book mare of Debbies.  This was our first foray into the world of anglo-arabians, so the whole experience was a huge learning curve, and I must say a very exciting one.
Thank you to Debbie for entrusting him to us.
Also thank you to Gary and Sandra Weavers of Al Ruqa Stud for entrusting us with their lovely bay purebred colt  Al Ruqa Kazar. He is also by Shakla’s Silver Shaklan and his dam line is very similar to our breeding lines.  His mother Eastwinds Desireable is by Eastwinds Ovation dec. and out of an Eastwinds Axplosion sister. This colt is a very elegant bay with a beautiful top line and long hooky neck. A ‘lovely front’ as they say. He is extremely similar to Eastwinds Ovation in type and we all have high hopes of him as a sire.
His Show campaign this season included  firsts and champions ,and finished on a high last weekend as he was awarded Supreme Arabian Exhibit at the Arabs Inc Autumn Affair Show.
Special mention must also be made of our two year old grey gelding QHF Eminent (Om El Eminence x QHF Luv Me Too). Known as Johnny.  He too has given us moments of joy.  He has had little handling and hadn’t been shown as he is that yukky bay/grey colour but we decided to take him to the National Capital Horse Show.  He had his first bathing and clipping and first float trip.  He took it all in his stride.  He came off the float, and into the Ring with a huge floating action (that sight alone was worth taking him for).  To our great excitement he won Champion 2yo Purebred Gelding. wow
His Sire, Om El Eminence, imp USA was kindly lent to us for a season by Rod Payne from Caballo Arabe Stud in WA. Eminence endeared himself to us with his delightful people-loving temperament and his calm and sensible nature.  His movement was also exceptional.  All in all he was a joy to look at and to have in the barn.  In the time he was here Eminence sired for us three gorgeous fillies, QHF Ooh La La, QHF Eminessence and QHF Blessing, and one gelding, QHF Eminent. We are very grateful to Rod for sharing him with us.   We are hoping these fillies will take us on the next step of our wonderful journey with Arabians.

The Story of Blessing
Quartz Hill Farm Blessing,
one of these three fillies, is significant as she is the last female foal of Eastwinds Made In Heaven deceased.   ‘Blessing’ is just a blessing as we nearly lost her. She was just a wee bubby and contracted joint ill in her back hock on Christmas Day (of course).  She could not put this leg to the ground, so her front legs were unable to stand the strain of keeping her up, and both her front tendons snapped.  We had no option but to try and splint them.  She was premature and not terribly strong. The splints the vet put on her were too heavy and she kept pitching forward on to her face, this was heartbreaking to watch.  We decided to take them off after the first hour, then we had to try and devise some other method of support .  We spoke to a few people to get some ideas, then the journey began. We used 2 lengths of black poly pipe  (cut in half) on each leg and packed it with great wads of cotton wool, then we bandaged down the leg with extra tape round the top and bottom.  At first we had it on the sides of her legs, but imagine our horror when we started to see her little hooves curling up at the front, so we changed the system and put the splints on the front and back of her legs.  She soon learnt to walk on her little peg legs god bless her.  We had to re-bandage these splints every three days to avoid sores forming. After a while she would lie down for us and stay there while we unwrapped and re-bandaged her little legs.  We did this for 5 weeks. Unfortunately she did develop sores and her fetlocks are permanently enlarged. After the splints came off she had to have special little shoes glued on for a further few weeks. Her temperament was and is exceptional. Throughout all this she never gave up or became nasty.  Thank heavens we still have her, and now she gallops around the paddocks just like all the other horses. She is truly ‘a blessing’  We are looking forward to the day when we are able to put her in foal.  She is rising three now so we will probably wait another year.
I wanted to mention the stories of ‘Luke’ and ‘Blessing’ to to emphasise that life here is not all about major show wins, but also a journey through darker times as well

Open Day

The Quartz Hill Farm and Friends Open Day was very successful with well over 150 people enjoying the hospitality and horses of Ray and Ally Hudson, Nicole and Adrian Studley, Kevin Cantwell and Kem Hazelton, Janine Snowie and her daughter Sarah and Chrissy and Mick Millar and their special guests Tom Tancred and Les Bradney of Eastwinds Stud.
The aim of the day was to promote the Arabian breed to the wider world in a relaxed and happy atmosphere. Complimentary afternoon tea was enjoyed by all and a display of ridden Arabians finished the afternoon.
The ridden display went very smoothly and showed just how versatile and tractable the Arabian horse really is. We had a group of six riders including 12 year old Sarah riding a purebred gelding, Kevin Cantwell on a pure bred mare, Janine Snowie riding her purebred gelding, Robyn Plummer on a part-bred pony, Jackson Cantwell, just 4 years old, being led on a purebred mare and Richard Sharman riding the stallion Red Hot Luv'a at his first public appearance under saddle.
